What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Unlike older keys, modern car keys have chips in them that are unique to each car. This prevents thieves from simply taking the key and turning on the car.

A common sight is a small, beige box beneath a pilot's seat in most aircraft. It is a transponder, and it is set to transmit the SQUAWK code whenever the airplane is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set to the 'ON', the ALT, or the SBY (standby position) positions.

It's common to hear a pilot directed by air traffic control to "squawk ident". This is a directive for pilots to press their transponder's IDENT button. The ident button makes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens, allowing them to easily identify your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 distinct code blocks that can be assigned to an aircraft. However, there are also reserved codes which prevent the use of specific codes in areas with high traffic or in times of emergency. The discrete code blocks are configured using statistical analysis to limit the chance that two aircraft with the same SQUAWK codes will be in the same sector at any one time.

A transponder key is equipped with an embedded chip that contains the ID code. If a car's security light is illuminated, it means that the ID code inside the key isn't compatible with the one in the car's computer. The car's immobilizer will be disabled, and it will not start without another key. The six digits that make up the VIN code are a sequential serial number that uniquely identifies the vehicle or truck. The last digit is the check number and the rest of the numbers are transliterated to numbers. The first digit is assigned an 8 and each subsequent digit grows in value by one until the seventh digit is nine, which becomes two. Then, the entire VIN will be converted back to its original form, by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is the same as the check digit then the VIN is valid.

Data Transfer
